I came to get my hair dyed for the first time and had an amazing experience. Dave did such an amazing job with dyeing and cutting my hair, he was really nice and was very informative. Everyone at the salon was really helpful and kind. I absolutely love how my hair turned out and would recommend Hairtell to anyone who wants to get their hair done.

As someone with thick, bleached hair, finding a skilled hairstylist while traveling in Vancouver has always been a challenge. However, Kennedy delivered an exceptional blowout. The hair wash was one of the best I’ve ever experienced, and he took his time to ensure my hair looked fantastic. I highly recommend him!

Obsessed with this place. I definitely found one of the best hair colour spots. To be honest, the work they do is really above expectations. They exactly know what they are doing. I am amazed by their experience and the effort they put. Definitely recommend this place.

I usually come out of hair appointments feeling disappointed, this was the first time I didn’t feel that way at all
She gives you exactly what you ask for and really knows how to colour dark Indian hair which is so hard to come by

Appointment with Dave

I found Hairtell Salon on TikTok and booked an appointment with Dave for a cut and color. I was charged $486 (paid $510 because I felt pressured to tip), and unfortunately, the experience was deeply disappointing.

From the start, the service was unprofessional. I arrived at 9.04am, but Dave didn’t begin until 9:40am because he was chatting with another client. Throughout my 3-hour appointment, he frequently left me mid-service to talk to others. As a paying client in his chair, I expected more focus and respect.

Before we began, I clearly communicated that my hair is thin and brittle, especially in the front, and needed very gentle handling. Despite this, Dave was incredibly rough—yanking through my hair with a brush to the point my neck was jerking, only to be told “be strong, be strong” each time. I found this both inappropriate and dismissive.

I explicitly said no bleach, and he claimed to be using a “lightening solution.” I later learned this solution contains ammonia and hydrogen peroxide—ingredients that are considered bleach, especially harmful for fragile hair. I expressed multiple times that it was stinging, and he brushed it off until his wife walked by and finally acknowledged, “I think that’s more than enough, no?” Not reassuring.

The final color was nowhere near what I asked for. I showed the deep, rich red from their TikTok video—but walked out with a brassy, clown-like red that completely washed me out. When I questioned it, I was told I’d “get used to it.” His kids then tried upselling me shampoo and conditioner to preserve the shade I didn’t even want.

While their family dynamic may seem warm to returning clients, it was clear that new clients are not treated with the same care. The vibe felt clique-ish, rushed, and dismissive.

To make things worse, when I got to Italy and visited a professional salon, the colorist immediately confirmed bleach had been used—and treated my hair with proper care and skill. My hair has never felt better after that correction.

Bottom line: I would never return to Hairtell Salon. The quality does not match the price, especially for a home-based setup charging downtown Vancouver rates. If you’re a regular, that’s your call—but if you’re new? Save yourself the trauma. My hair, scalp, and spirit are still recovering.
